I would consider it a requirement to install “1” real-time Antispyware program. Real-time means it is always running and “actively scanning your computer, as opposed to a passive online virus scanner which needs to be manually started.
NEVER install more than “1” real-time active antispyware program. There are many antivirus vendors to choose from, but I have only chosen to include the only “paid” versions I would ever use (Malwarebytes & Superantispyware, both which are active versions), although they both offer free passive versions as well, and “2” free versions (Spywareblaster and Spybot), both of which I like and have personally used.

Caution: Installing more than “1″ active antispyware program can cause Windows to become unstable, but you can safely install and run several “passive” antispyware programs.
